The Complete Guide to SEO for Doctors in India (2026)
Every day, patients across India type things like “orthopedic doctor near me”, “best gynaecologist in Indore” or “haddi ka doctor” into Google. Some doctors get those calls. Equally good doctors, sometimes just down the road, don’t. The difference is rarely medical skill. It’s how well Google understands, trusts and shows your clinic.
This guide explains, in plain language, how SEO works for doctors in India in 2026, and what actually moves the needle. It’s based on real data from the doctor profiles we manage at Click2Cure: 91,689+ calls, 2.24 lakh+ direction requests and 32.5 lakh+ profile views from Google between April 2025 and August 2026.’
What “SEO for doctors” really means
SEO (search engine optimisation) simply means making it easy for Google to show you to the right patients. For doctors, there are three layers, and they work together:
- Local SEO (Google Business Profile and Maps): the map results patients see when they search for a doctor near them. For most clinics, this is where the majority of new patient calls come from.
- Website SEO: your own website ranking for treatments and questions, like “knee replacement cost in Pune” or “PCOS treatment”.
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation): being named when patients ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI Overviews which doctor to see.
If you do only one thing, do local SEO first. It is closest to the patient’s decision: they search, compare the top results on the map, and call.
How patients actually choose a doctor on Google:
From the searches that showed our doctors’ profiles, one pattern is clear: patients search by need and location, not by doctor name. In a single month (August 2026), our doctors’ profiles appeared in more than 91,500 searches. “Orthopedic doctor near me” alone brought 2,120 of them. Other common searches: “ent doctor near me”, “eye hospital near me”, “pediatrician near me”, “gynecologist near me” and “dermatologist near me”.
The journey is short:
- Search: “gynaecologist near me”
- Compare: the 3 clinics on the map, their ratings, reviews, photos and timings
- Act: call, get directions, open WhatsApp or visit the website
Google Maps shows only 3 clinics before patients have to click “More places”. Being in those 3, for your speciality, in your area, is what fills an OPD. Read more in what Indian patients really search.
How Google decides which doctor to show
Google has said publicly that local results depend on three things:
- Relevance: how well your profile matches the search. Categories, description and services matter here.
- Distance: how close you are to the person searching. You can’t change this.
- Prominence: how well known and trusted you are. Reviews, activity, photos and mentions across the web.
Two of these three can be built, and that is exactly where most doctors lose.
The 12 things that make a doctor’s Google profile rank
- The right primary category (e.g. “Orthopaedic surgeon”, not just “Doctor”)
- Supporting categories for your key services
- A clear, patient-friendly description
- 15–20 services, each explained in 2–3 lines
- Accurate timings, plus holiday hours
- WhatsApp and appointment booking links
- 25+ real photos: signboard, reception, consultation room, team
- Regular Google updates (posts)
- A steady flow of genuine reviews
- A reply to every review
- Verification and protection from wrong “suggested edits”
- The same name, address and phone everywhere online
What we usually find when we audit a doctor’s profile
When we audited doctor profiles across India in September 2026, these were the most common gaps:
- 93% had no appointment booking link
- 81% had not added a new photo in months
- 80% had most recent reviews unanswered
- 75% had never set holiday hours
- 60% had too few photos
- 58% had Google’s suggested edits waiting
- 49% were missing supporting categories
Each gap is a patient going to the next doctor on the list. None of them is hard to fix, but they need someone to fix them properly and keep them fixed every month. Here is a step-by-step checklist to rank your clinic on Google Maps.
Reviews: the one thing Google values most
More recent, genuine reviews move you up. But how you get them matters. Fake reviews, reviews from staff or family, or offering discounts in return can get reviews removed, or the whole profile suspended. A steady flow of 2–3 genuine reviews a day is far safer than a sudden burst.
The simplest routine: after a good consultation, the doctor or reception asks, “A short Google review really helps us”, and sends the review link on WhatsApp the same day. Read our full guide on getting Google reviews ethically as a doctor.

AEO: the next wave
Patients have started asking AI which doctor to see. ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overview usually names just 2–3 doctors, not ten. AI tends to recommend doctors whose details are consistent everywhere, whose reviews mention specific treatments, and whose services and content clearly answer patient questions. The good news: everything that makes you rank on Google Maps also prepares you for AI. Learn more in what AEO means for doctors.
How long does it take?
It never happens overnight, but done right, it works. In our data, doctors went from near-zero to 70–170 calls a month; a few did it in 3 months, most within 6–16 months of consistent work. Month 1 is foundation, months 2–3 bring rising visibility, and months 4–6 is where calls usually build steadily.
Where to start this week
- Search your speciality + “near me” from your clinic. Are you in the top 3?
- Check your primary category and services.
- Add 10 real clinic photos.
- Reply to every review from the last 3 months.
- Set up a simple review routine at reception.
Website SEO for doctors: what your site needs
Your Google profile brings the call; your website builds the confidence to make it. A doctor’s website doesn’t need to be large, but it needs the right pages:
- One page per key treatment. “Knee replacement”, “Root canal”, “PCOS treatment”. Explain what it is, who needs it, recovery, and common questions. These pages rank for treatment searches and answer AI tools.
- A clear About page. Qualifications, experience, hospital affiliations and a real photo.
- A Contact page with the same name, address and phone as your Google profile, a map, timings and WhatsApp.
- Fast and mobile-friendly. Most patients search on phones. A slow site loses them.
- FAQ sections on each treatment page, written in patient language.
Link your website from your Google profile, and link your Google review page from your website.
The most common mistakes doctors make
- Keyword-stuffed names like “Best Ortho Doctor in Pune | Knee Specialist”. It may look helpful, but Google can flag it. Use your real signboard name.
- Buying reviews or asking staff to review. Short-term gain, long-term risk.
- Wrong or too many categories. Only choose what you actually offer.
- Different details on different sites. An old phone number on Justdial or a different clinic name on Practo confuses Google and AI.
- Ignoring Google’s suggested edits. Google sometimes changes timings or categories based on user suggestions. Review them regularly.
- Posting once and stopping. Consistency is what compounds.
How to measure whether it’s working
Your Google Business Profile shows free performance data. Track these every month:
- Calls from your profile
- Direction requests
- Website clicks
- Profile views (Search and Maps)
- Searches that found you: the actual words patients used
- New reviews and your average rating
Compare month on month, not day to day. Google also takes around 10 days to finalise its numbers, so the most recent days always look lower than they really are.
Doing it yourself vs getting help
Everything in this guide can be done by a motivated doctor or a trained staff member. The challenge is consistency: 12 elements, 3–4 updates a week, review replies, photos, monitoring edits and monthly tracking, alongside a full OPD. That is why many doctors choose a partner. If you do, choose one that works only with doctors, shows real results from clinics like yours, and never uses fake reviews.
Ethics first
Doctors carry a responsibility others don’t. Keep content medically accurate, avoid exaggerated claims or guarantees, protect patient privacy in reviews and replies, and never publish patient photos without written consent. Done this way, online growth strengthens your reputation instead of risking it.
