Every day, patients across India type things like “orthopedic doctor near me”, “best gynaecologist in Indore” or “haddi ka doctor” into Google. Some doctors get those calls. Equally good doctors, sometimes just down the road, don’t. The difference is rarely medical skill. It’s how well Google understands, trusts and shows your clinic.
This guide explains, in plain language, how SEO works for doctors in India in 2026, and what actually moves the needle. It’s based on real data from the doctor profiles we manage at Click2Cure: 91,689+ calls, 2.24 lakh+ direction requests and 32.5 lakh+ profile views from Google between April 2025 and August 2026.’
SEO (search engine optimisation) simply means making it easy for Google to show you to the right patients. For doctors, there are three layers, and they work together:
If you do only one thing, do local SEO first. It is closest to the patient’s decision: they search, compare the top results on the map, and call.
From the searches that showed our doctors’ profiles, one pattern is clear: patients search by need and location, not by doctor name. In a single month (August 2026), our doctors’ profiles appeared in more than 91,500 searches. “Orthopedic doctor near me” alone brought 2,120 of them. Other common searches: “ent doctor near me”, “eye hospital near me”, “pediatrician near me”, “gynecologist near me” and “dermatologist near me”.
The journey is short:
Google Maps shows only 3 clinics before patients have to click “More places”. Being in those 3, for your speciality, in your area, is what fills an OPD. Read more in what Indian patients really search.
Google has said publicly that local results depend on three things:
Two of these three can be built, and that is exactly where most doctors lose.
When we audited doctor profiles across India in September 2026, these were the most common gaps:
Each gap is a patient going to the next doctor on the list. None of them is hard to fix, but they need someone to fix them properly and keep them fixed every month. Here is a step-by-step checklist to rank your clinic on Google Maps.
More recent, genuine reviews move you up. But how you get them matters. Fake reviews, reviews from staff or family, or offering discounts in return can get reviews removed, or the whole profile suspended. A steady flow of 2–3 genuine reviews a day is far safer than a sudden burst.
The simplest routine: after a good consultation, the doctor or reception asks, “A short Google review really helps us”, and sends the review link on WhatsApp the same day. Read our full guide on getting Google reviews ethically as a doctor.
Across a snapshot of our actively managed profiles, from April 2025 to August 2026:
On average, a Click2Cure doctor gets 460+ calls a year from Google. Some of our standout stories:
See more on our results page, or by speciality: dentists, orthopaedic doctors.
Patients have started asking AI which doctor to see. ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overview usually names just 2–3 doctors, not ten. AI tends to recommend doctors whose details are consistent everywhere, whose reviews mention specific treatments, and whose services and content clearly answer patient questions. The good news: everything that makes you rank on Google Maps also prepares you for AI. Learn more in what AEO means for doctors.
It never happens overnight, but done right, it works. In our data, doctors went from near-zero to 70–170 calls a month; a few did it in 3 months, most within 6–16 months of consistent work. Month 1 is foundation, months 2–3 bring rising visibility, and months 4–6 is where calls usually build steadily.
Your Google profile brings the call; your website builds the confidence to make it. A doctor’s website doesn’t need to be large, but it needs the right pages:
Link your website from your Google profile, and link your Google review page from your website.
Your Google Business Profile shows free performance data. Track these every month:
Compare month on month, not day to day. Google also takes around 10 days to finalise its numbers, so the most recent days always look lower than they really are.
Everything in this guide can be done by a motivated doctor or a trained staff member. The challenge is consistency: 12 elements, 3–4 updates a week, review replies, photos, monitoring edits and monthly tracking, alongside a full OPD. That is why many doctors choose a partner. If you do, choose one that works only with doctors, shows real results from clinics like yours, and never uses fake reviews.
Doctors carry a responsibility others don’t. Keep content medically accurate, avoid exaggerated claims or guarantees, protect patient privacy in reviews and replies, and never publish patient photos without written consent. Done this way, online growth strengthens your reputation instead of risking it.

For most clinics, the best starting point is local SEO: a fully optimised Google Business Profile with the right categories, detailed services, regular updates and a steady flow of genuine reviews. Website SEO and AEO build on top of it.
Foundation work takes about a month. Visibility usually rises in months 2–3, and calls build steadily from months 4–6. In our data, some doctors reached 100+ calls a month in 3 months; most took 6–16 months.
